What We Are Learning- week of Sept. 23rd

Week of September 23rd
Reading:  This week we will be reading the story, “Sun.”  Students will work on identifying the text features in a non-fiction book.  We will also work on using key words to summarize.

Your child will come home with his/her guided reading book to read in their “book in a bag.”  Please remember to practice reading your child’s book-in-a-bag nightly with them.  As a reminder, we do 2 lessons with each new book.  Raz Kids is a resource to use if you are looking for additional reading practice at home.  Information about how to log in was sent home.  When reading fiction books, the kids should be able to identify the characters, setting, main idea, and details/major events to support the main idea.  They should also be able to summarize the beginning, middle, and end of the story. When reading non fiction books, the kids should be able to identify the main topic and facts to support the main topic.  They are also learning about text features and the importance of text features when reading a non fiction text.

Writing: Students will continue writing about “small moments” throughout our personal narrative writing unit.  We will continue to work on writing a beginning, middle, and end  across pages. We will also work on capitalization, end marks and writing detailed sentences through mini-lessons.  Our mini lessons have been focusing on bringing characters to life by adding voice and action as we revise our stories.

Grammar: We will continue to review nouns and verbs this week. Check out this awesome song to help identify what a verb is on You Tube!

Math: Our math lessons each day will include computational fluency, fact fluency, and core math instruction focused on the first grade common core math standards. Computational fluency will help the students to use the most effective and efficient strategies.  Fact Fluency is working with both addition and subtraction facts within 10.  Our end-of-the-year goal is to have students complete 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute.  Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core. The children will work on building 2-digit numbers (with base ten blocks, digit cards) and compare both numbers with <, >, and = symbols.  We will also play a game called “Roll and Record Subtraction” this week!
