Guest Reader/Week of January 27th

Thank you to our guest reader Mrs. Yadav!!

What We’re Learning This Week:

Reading: “Little Penguins Tale”  (Fiction)
Students will be working on asking and answering questions about key details, and then using the key details to describe characters, settings, and major events in a story. Students will be discussing and identifying who is telling the story. We’ll be continuing guided reading and Daily 5/centers.   Please keep in mind, depending on the guided reading schedule each day, your child may not bring home a NEW book to read every day. As always, we’ll be reading poetry weekly for fluency and expression practice.

Writing: We began our new non-fiction writing unit.  We reviewed non-fiction books and discussed how they teach us about topics.  The students then brainstormed and charted their own topics that they know a lot about. Students have been working on writing facts/information about a topic after learning how to plan their writing. After planning their writing, students have learned how to write an introduction, 2-3 detailed chapters, and a conclusion. We  will continue applying what we learn in new books that we write. We will also be continuing to work on capitalization, end marks and writing detailed sentences through mini-lessons.

Word Study/Spelling:
• Spelling patterns: word families  -ish,  -ash,  -ush  (dish, rash, rush)
• Read/Write words- next, help, have (3rd column)

Phonics: mixed short vowel review
-comparative endings

Grammar:
• Frequently reoccurring adjectives.

Math: Our math lessons each day will include computational fluency, fact fluency, and core math instruction focused on the first grade common core math standards. Computational fluency will help the students to use the most effective and efficient strategies. Fact Fluency is working with both addition and subtraction facts within 10. At the end of first grade, students will need to solve 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute. Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core. We will continue to work on story problems, focusing on giving the correct number sentence with missing numbers in all positions, and then solving the number sentence.  We will also learn about story problems that do not have a change, but are a part/part/whole story problem.

3rd grading period Science and Social Studies:
