Guest Reader/ What We Are Learning - Week of Sept. 2

Thank you to our guest reader Mrs. Burdett for reading to the class!!!!

For the week of 9/2/2019
What We’re Learning This Week:

Reading: “Where Animals Live” (Non-Fiction Text) We will work on identifying the main idea and key details of a non-fiction text.  We will also work on asking and answering questions about the key details. We will also read the story “Our Tree Named Steve” and learn how to identify the beginning, middle, and end of a story.

I have been starting guided reading.  This is where I have the opportunity to work with your child at his/her reading level.   Your child is beginning to come home with his/her guided reading book to practice in their “book in a bag.” Please remember to have your child read the book-in-a-bag.  It is important to always return “the book in a bag” the next day.  Thank you!!

Writing: We will be continuing writing workshop and brainstorming small moments for our personal narrative writing unit. Students will continue to work on writing about personal “small moments”. The students will learn how to write a story across pages with an introduction, details, and ending.  We will also be continuing to work on capitalization, end marks, and writing detailed sentences through mini-lessons. This week we will continue to focus on planning for writing and using pictures to add to our stories.

Grammar: We will be reviewing what makes a COMPLETE sentence (conventions, spacing, capital letters, and neatness.) - Identifying the naming and telling part of a sentence.

Word Study/Spelling
Read and Write Words:  is  like  me
Short vowel word families will be our focus for this quarter. Word families share the same vowels/patterns and rhyming words. We are working on short vowel “a”, short vowel “u”, and short vowel “i”.
Feature/Pattern of the week: Word Families – an, un, in
Ex: man, ran, sun, fun, win, tin

Math: Our math lessons each day will include computational fluency, fact fluency, and core math instruction focused on the first grade common core math standards. Computational fluency will help the students to use the most effective and efficient strategies. Fact Fluency is working with both addition and subtraction facts within 10. By the end of the school year, one goal is for students to complete 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute. Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core.   We are also working on place value- that a number is made up of tens and ones. We will practice building numbers within 100, then build the number that is 10 more/10 less, and write the numbers. We will also begin to follow story problems and record number sentences.
