Guest Reader/ Week of March 2nd

Thank you to Mr. Abbott for being our guest reader!

What We’re Learning This Week:

Reading:  We will be reading two short passages called, “Tess the Turtle” and “Jack and Anna.”  Students will be working on asking and answering key details in a story. They will identify characters, setting and major events of the story in order.   We’ll be continuing guided reading and daily five/centers.  As always, we’ll be reading poetry weekly for fluency and expression practice.

*Please continue to read your child’s book-in-a-bag nightly with them.

Writing:  The first graders will continue their informational writing unit.  We will also be continuing to work on capitalization, end marks and writing detailed sentences through mini-lessons.  During this unit, each child will write information books about lots of different topics and revisit his or her writing to self-assess and revise (they will name a topic, give facts, and provide a sense of closure).  This week, the students will pick their best informational piece to focus on revising, editing, and publishing.

Word Study/Spelling:
Read and Write Words: eat, each, from, give
Feature/Pattern of the week: Review short vowel word families with beginning and ending consonant blends
Ex: stand, grump, cost,
Grammar:  Review common, proper and possessive nouns; using singular and plural nouns with matching verbs.

Math: Our math lessons each day will include computational fluency, fact fluency, and core math instruction focused on the first grade common core math standards. Computational fluency will help the students to use the most effective and efficient strategies.  Fact Fluency is working with both addition and subtraction facts within 10.  Our end-of-the-year goal is to have students complete 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute. Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core. This week, we will really focus on determining the missing number in an addition or subtraction problem.  We will also focus on adding & subtracting multiples of 10 from multiples of 10.

3rd grading period Science and Social Studies: Science: Properties of Water
Social Studies:
