Thank you to Mrs. DiSanto for being our guest reader!!
Reading: “Snowflake Bentley” by Jacqueline Briggs Martin
Students will be working on asking and answering key details in a story. They will identify characters, setting and major events of the story in order. This will help to retell a story. We’ll be continuing guided reading and Daily 5 Centers. As always, we’ll be reading poetry weekly for fluency and expression practice.
Writing: We are continuing our non-fiction writing unit. We will continue to review non-fiction books and discuss how they teach us about topics. Students are working on writing facts/information about a topic. After planning their writing using a table of contents, students write an introduction, 2-3 detailed chapters, and a conclusion. We have really been focusing on adding details to really teach our readers, as well as adding text features such as labels and captions. The students will soon choose one of their best nonfiction writings to revise, edit, and publish.

Computational fluency will help the students to use the most effective and efficient strategies. Fact Fluency is working with both addition and subtraction facts within 10. At the end of first grade, students will need to solve 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute. Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core. We will be focusing on fact families and how addition and subtraction are related.
