Week of February 18th

What We’re Learning This Week:

Reading: “Melting and Freezing”  (Non Fiction)
Students will be working on text features in non-fiction books.  We will also focus on summarizing main ideas in informational books. We’ll be continuing guided reading and Daily 5/centers.   Please keep in mind, depending on the guided reading schedule each day, your child may not bring home a NEW book to read every day. As always, we’ll be reading poetry weekly for fluency and expression practice.

Writing: We are continuing our non-fiction writing unit.  We will continue to review non-fiction books and discuss how they teach us about topics. Students are working on writing facts/information about a topic. After planning their writing using a table of contents, students write an introduction, 2-3 detailed chapters, and a conclusion. We have really been focusing on adding details to really teach our readers, as well as adding text features such as labels and captions.

Word Study/Spelling:
-Pattern of the week: short vowel words (a, e, i, o, u) with beginning blends
-Read and write words: then, them, was

Phonics: final blends

Grammar:
• Determiners (few, several, many)

Math: Our math lessons each day will include computational fluency, fact fluency, and core math instruction focused on the first grade common core math standards. Computational fluency will help the students to use the most effective and efficient strategies. Fact Fluency is working with both addition and subtraction facts within 10. At the end of first grade, students will need to solve 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute. Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core. We will  focus on fact families this week (3+5=8, 5+3=8, 8-3=5, 8-5=3).
