Guest Reader/Week of January 27th

What We’re Learning This Week:  

Reading: “Little Penguins Tale”  (Fiction)
Students will be working on asking and answering questions about key details, and then using the key details to describe characters, settings, and major events in a story. Students will be discussing and identifying who is telling the story. We’ll be continuing guided reading and Daily 5/centers.   Please keep in mind, depending on the guided reading schedule each day, your child may not bring home a NEW book to read every day. As always, we’ll be reading poetry weekly for fluency and expression practice.

Writing: We began our new non-fiction writing unit.  We reviewed non-fiction books and discussed how they teach us about topics.  The students then brainstormed and charted their own topics that they know a lot about. Students have been working on writing facts/information about a topic after learning how to plan their writing. After planning their writing, students have learned how to write an introduction, 2-3 detailed chapters, and a conclusion. We  will continue applying what we learn in new books that we write. We will also be continuing to work on capitalization, end marks and writing detailed sentences through mini-lessons.

Word Study/Spelling:
• Spelling patterns: word families  -ish,  -ash,  -ush  (dish, rash, rush)
• Read/Write words- next, help, have (3rd column)

Phonics: mixed short vowel review
-comparative endings

Grammar:
• Frequently reoccurring adjectives.

Math: Our math lessons each day will include computational fluency, fact fluency, and core math instruction focused on the first grade common core math standards. Computational fluency will help the students to use the most effective and efficient strategies. Fact Fluency is working with both addition and subtraction facts within 10. At the end of first grade, students will need to solve 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute. Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core. We will continue to work on story problems, focusing on giving the correct number sentence with missing numbers in all positions, and then solving the number sentence.  We will also learn about story problems that do not have a change, but are a part/part/whole story problem.

3rd grading period Science and Social Studies:
Science: Living and Non-Living Things (gummy worms and mealworms)
Social Studies: Geography/Places and Regions

-Snacks should be nut free.

-Class Pictures have been scheduled for February 4th.  If you need another payment envelope, let me know. 
-Valentine’s Day parties- February 12th : student names have been sent home so the kids can fill out their valentines.  Please send the valentines to school on February 12th.  The kids will decorate bags in school to put their valentines in.

Guest Reader/Week of January 20th

What We’re Learning This Week:  

Reading: Frog and Toad All Year: Down the Hill” and “Frog and Toad Together-in the garden”  (Fiction)
Students will compare and contrast adventures and experiences of characters in stories, as well as comparing and contrasting the two Frog and Toad stories.  We will also review characters, setting, and major events. We’ll be continuing guided reading and Daily 5/centers.   Please keep in mind, depending on the guided reading schedule each day, your child may not bring home a NEW book to read every day. As always, we’ll be reading poetry weekly for fluency and expression practice.

At the end of first grade, students will need to solve 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute. Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core. Students will be working on story problems with the missing number in all positions.  We will be continuing working on telling time to the hour.

Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core. Students will be working on understanding odd and even numbers, and adding and subtracting to 20 (using doubles, near doubles facts).  We will also work on telling time to the hour.

Guest Reader/ Week of January 6th

What We’re Learning The Week of January 6th:

Reading: Ocean Animals (Non-Fiction)
Students will be working on retelling the story, “Ocean Animals.”  We will also identify the main idea and key details. Students will show connections to how the animals are built to survive. We’ll be continuing guided reading and Daily 5/centers. As always, we’ll be reading poetry weekly for fluency and expression practice.

Writing: We will begin our new writing unit which is non-fiction writing. We will also be continuing to work on capitalization, end marks and writing detailed sentences through mini-lessons. Students will be working on teaching others facts/information they know about a specific topic.

Word Study/Spelling:
•Spelling patterns: -k, -wh, -qu, -tw (ex: quit, king, when, twig)
• Read/Write words-big, her, over

Grammar
• Compound words and review of verb tense

Math: Our math lessons each day will include computational fluency, fact fluency, and core math instruction focused on the first grade common core math standards. Computational fluency will help the students to use the most effective and efficient strategies. Fact Fluency is working with both addition and subtraction facts within 10. At the end of first grade, students will need to solve 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute. Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core. Students will be working on numbers and operations in base ten. This is game week (ex: Equal Sums, Speed, How Many Am I Hiding?)!

Guest Reader/ Week of December 16th

What We’re Learning: Week of December 16th:

Reading:  We will be reading a VARIETY of holiday books. **I will be finishing several individual assessments for the end of the quarter.  As a result, I will not be able to follow my normal guided reading schedule every day.  Therefore, your child may not receive as many guided reading books in the next couple weeks.  Please continue to practice reading the book in bag with your child when they do bring it home.  If they do not bring a new book home that day, they can read a choice book or work on Raz-Kids.  

Writing: We will finish our opinion writing unit.  The students have learned to write a review about anything, such as toys, sports, restaurants, video games, movies, and book reviews.  They have learned how to write an introduction, defend their opinion with at least three detailed reasons, and write a conclusion. The children have picked one of their best pieces to revise, edit, and publish for the end of our writing unit.  The children also did a writing check where they applied everything they learned independently. I will continue to conference with students and reinforce the application of what we are learning.

-Letter Name- Consonants Blends: pr, tr, dr, br (trim, drip, prep, brim)
-Read and Write Words: all, away, back
-Grammar: Continue to Use verbs to convey a sense of past, present, and future 

Math: Our math lessons each day will include computational fluency, fact fluency, and core math instruction focused on the first grade common core math standards. Computational fluency will help the students to use the most effective and efficient strategies.  Fact Fluency is working with both addition and subtraction facts within 10.  Our end-of-the-year goal is to have students complete 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute.  Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core.   We will continue to work on surveys and collecting data, as well as representing the data in a picture graph.  We also will work on answering questions about the data.  We will also work in groups to solve problems together.

: Habitats/ Wants and Needs
Social Studies: Economics – we will learn about needs and wants.

Homework: Continue reading and counting backwards. Thank you for your continued home support!

Reading:  We will be reading a fiction story called “Ruby in her Own Time”.   We will focus on using words to describe how the main character changed throughout the book.  We will also review characters, setting, and a major event.   **Starting next week, I will be doing several individual assessments for the end of the quarter.  As a result, I will not be able to follow my normal guided reading schedule every day.  Therefore, your child will not receive as many guided reading books in the next couple weeks. If they do not bring a book home, they can read a choice book or work on Raz-Kids.
